The Langtang trek in detail
Of all the major trekking valleys, Langtang is the closest to Kathmandu: 120 km by road and no domestic flight. In 8 days you walk up from Syabrubesi, at 1,460 m, to Kyanjin Gompa, at 3,870 m, at the foot of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), with the option of climbing a summit above 4,700 m. It is the ideal trek for a first taste of the high Himalaya.
A national park, forests and red pandas
Created in 1976, Langtang National Park was Nepal’s first mountain national park. The first two days of walking follow the Langtang Khola river through a forest of oak, maple and bamboo, home to langur monkeys and the more elusive red panda. You also pass mule trains and the first Tamang villages. The forest opens out after Lama Hotel, and at Langtang village, at 3,430 m, you finally see the upper valley, wide and framed by icy peaks.
Langtang village and the 2015 earthquake
On 25 April 2015, the earthquake set off an avalanche of ice and rock that flattened Langtang village and killed nearly 300 people, villagers and trekkers alike. The village was rebuilt a little further on, and the lodges reopened in 2016. Walking here today also means supporting families who lost everything. A memorial marks the site of the old village. Mohan, who was already guiding in this valley before 2015, talks about it with his groups.
Kyanjin Gompa, cheese and summits
Kyanjin Gompa, at 3,870 m, is the end of the valley: a monastery, around twenty lodges and a yak cheese factory founded in 1955 with Swiss help, which still sells its cheese to trekkers. You spend two nights here. In between, the choice is yours: Kyanjin Ri, at 4,773 m, takes 2–3 hours to climb and overlooks the whole cirque; Tserko Ri, at 4,984 m, takes 6–7 hours return and gives an even wider view, as far as the Tibetan peaks. Both are done without any equipment, at your own pace. This is the high point of the trek, and good preparation for a future trek to Everest Base Camp.
Tamang country
The people of the valley are Tamang, a Buddhist people of Tibetan origin with their own language. Carved mani walls, prayer flags and monasteries line the trail. To get to know them better, the Tamang Heritage Trail, on the other side of the valley, goes from village to village with homestay nights.
When to go, and how to extend the trek
You can trek in Langtang from October to May. Autumn brings the clearest skies, spring the rhododendrons in flower, and winter empty trails, with lodges that stay open as far as Kyanjin. See our guide Best time to trek in Nepal. The trek extends naturally to the sacred lakes of Gosainkunda, at 4,380 m, and the Helambu region: this is the 13-day Langtang-Helambu trek via Gosainkunda, which brings you back on foot almost all the way to Kathmandu. The agency obtains the Langtang National Park permit and the TIMS card for you, as explained in our permits guide.
